Welcome to Day #1

May 11, 2006

Responsible for welcoming all the summer associates and new recruits who are about to arrive? If so, I bet you’ll spend part of this weekend polishing your welcoming remarks. You may wish to consider setting specific objectives for everyone to accomplish by the end of Day #1, for instance:

- Know the location of your office, the nearest bathroom, the dining room or break room, mail room and copy center;

- Know your office phone number and e-mail address;

- Know the names of fellow summer associates and members of the recruiting department;

- Know the names of your supervisors who will dole out assignments and review work product; and

- Carry a pad of paper everywhere so you can record assignments whenever made.

Don’t hesitate to tell your new hires and recruits that they’ll probably make a few mistakes during their first days with your organization. Let them know that’s okay—as long as they learn from their mistakes.
