WOW Your Candidates

July 21, 2006

Too often, candidates arrive for interviews only to be shuttled from one unorganized interview to another. Because interviewers don’t fully understand their role in the process, each begins their discussion with a candidate by saying, “Tell me a little about yourself.”

Firms and corporations that opt to use behavioral interviewing really WOW candidates when they also strategically plan the entire interview process. I like to encourage firms and companies to designate certain interviewers as the ones who always ask questions about specific behaviors. For example, one interviewer is tasked to always ask about communication, another interviewer always asks about teamwork and another always asks about self-motivation.

This can yield huge benefits. At the end of the day, when an interviewer is asked to rank candidates, because the interviewer focused on one area of behavior and asked each candidate similar if not identical questions, the interviewer can make an “apple to apple” comparison. Additionally, the firm or company makes a positive impression on candidates. Where interviewers understand exactly what they are to ask and why, candidates are far less likely to be called upon to repeatedly review their past history and explain their interest in a position.
