That Time of Year Again
Most of our corporate and law firm clients will spend the next few weeks gearing up for this year’s on-campus interview season. If you work in the career services office of a law or business school, it’s a good idea to make sure your students know that the fundamental rules of business etiquette apply in the interview setting.
In future blogs, I’ll address how interviewees can present themselves best during an interview, manage a call back lunch or dinner and communicate with recruiters over the phone. Today, I’ll share some tips regarding what students should carry with them into their interviews. By the time your students arrive back on campus, you should have a list of trusty tips that will help your students succeed.
Encourage your students to carry the following with them to any scheduled interview:
Resume. In nearly all cases, candidates will enter the interview room and find the interviewer with resume in hand. Students should not, however, assume this will happen in every case. By carrying their resumes, candidates demonstrate preparedness.
Paper and pen. Students also look prepared when they carry a notepad and pen. Encourage your students to carry a clean note pad and a writing instrument that communicates they are serious about entering the professional world.
Portfolio or Briefcase. The interview is the first step candidates take in making the transition from students to professionals. They should replace the backpack they have carried to class with a quality portfolio or briefcase.
What’s the one thing student should NOT carry into an interview? Their cell phones. Recommend students leave their cell phones in their lockers. If candidates absolutely must carry a cell phone with them, remind them to turn it off before the interview begins.
