Tardiness Troubles

March 30, 2011

At least once in a life, nearly everyone gets caught in the unexpected traffic jam or the subway snafu. Yet, most recognize that persistent tardiness is simply rude. People who are frequently late to business meetings or social events communicate a complete disregard for others’ time. They further demonstrate a lack of personal organization, something that does not play well in today’s workplace. It can be a fatal error for any intern, summer associate or new hire to make.

While preparing for a presentation to a group of students regarding the importance of taking personal responsibility—including ensuring the students show up on time for interviews and work—I came across a 2008 posting on CNN’s website titled, “10 Best Excuses for Coming to Work Late.” According to the posting, at least 15% of workers admit to arriving late for work at least one day per week. (Really, once a week!) The majority of late arrivers cite traffic gridlock as the cause of their tardiness. Oversleeping came in second.

Never doubt the ingenuity of the American worker. When push comes to shove, about one-quarter of employees admit to creating a fanciful story to explain their tardiness. Among the top 10 real-life excuses employers report they’ve received are the following:

1. While rowing across the river to work, I got lost in the fog.

2. Someone stole all my daffodils.

3. I had to go audition for American Idol.

4. My ex-husband stole my car so I couldn't drive to work.

5. My route to work was shut down by a Presidential motorcade.

6. I have transient amnesia and couldn't remember my job.

7. I was indicted for securities fraud this morning.

8. The line was too long at Starbucks.

9. I was trying to get my gun back from the police.

10. I didn't have money for gas because all of the pawnshops were closed.

Today’s most successful employees always plan for contingencies. If necessary, they set a second alarm clock. They plan for those pesky Presidential motorcades. And above all, they avoid being arrested for securities fraud first thing in the morning.
