Getting Ready for Summer

January 25, 2007

Earlier this week, I participated in a panel presentation addressing summer associate programs and social events. The audience actively participated in the discussion, asking tons of questions and sharing their own experiences. Because members of the audience came from all across the country and from such varying size law firms, I walked away with the sense that I heard the experiences of a great cross-section of the legal community.

If nothing else, it became absolutely clear that those of you who are responsible for your firm’s summer associate program, must clearly spell out your expectations both to current members of the firm, who will host the summers, as well as to the summers themselves. Everyone must understand that participation in social activities is an important part of the summer program. It’s a great way for current members of the firm to get to know the summers on an informal basis. And it’s an important way for your recruits to learn about the culture of your firm or organization.

I gathered a few horror stories from last year’s summer associate experience, many of which involved inappropriate attire. I heard about lots of bared midriffs, shorts worn to work (by both young men and young women), and the most surprising, one male summer associate who wore a sweat suit into the office . . . on a work day!!! And then there’s the I-Pod phenomenon. Apparently, some of last year’s recruits habitually walked through the halls of their law firms listening to their I-Pods . . . I guess so they could whistle why they work?!?!?!
