Choosing Your Interview Outfit

August 08, 2006

One study suggests that most of us develop our first impressions within 30 seconds of meeting another person. That’s a critically important statistic. It means a job candidate has less than half a minute to create a favorable impression in the mind of any interviewer. Select an interview outfit that communicates you are the consummate professional.

The rules regarding appropriate interview attire will vary dependent upon the firm or company with which you are interviewing. Candidates seeking positions with a cutting edge PR firm, for example, may dress in a flashier manner than candidates seeking a position at a white shoe law firm. In general, however, here are your best bets.

Ladies, you should start with a conservative suit and a complementary blouse. Select more conservative pumps. This is one event where you don’t want to be caught teetering on stilettos. Wear tan hosiery. Limit the amount of jewelry, make-up and perfume you don.

Gentlemen, you too should opt for a conservative suit. Wear a crisply pressed shirt and a conservative tie with a small repeating pattern. Select dark socks and conservative shoes. Limit the jewelry you wear to a watch and, if you’re married, a wedding band. Avoid dousing yourself in after-shave.
