Are You Elegant at Work?
Yves Saint Laurent’s creative director Stefano Pilati says it’s not easy to find elegant women these days, and when he does, the majority of them are “old.” Here’s what he said in an interview with VICE:
But seriously, it’s not easy to find elegant women. There are a few, the majority of whom are old—and there are one of maybe two in the world who created a new style when they were young. Today when I go to New York and survey art and fashion, I see smart women and the level is high. But there’s a difference between this and saying a woman is elegant.
Pilati continued:
My idea of elegance—and this refers to women as well as men—is that someone is elegant when he or she shows a good knowledge of what fits them, where you can find naturalness and self-esteem. Not showing off. Elegance is the idea of showing an optimistic depiction of oneself, and to lose oneself in the frivolity of style and fashion. Nowadays nobody gives a @!#* [my substitution] about being elegant or chic.
When I visit workplaces, I do encounter elegant people, and they seem to belong to every age group. In my own case, I work to dress in, if not an elegant, at least a stylish manner. In fact, for today’s trip to D.C. and back, I’ve worn a black wool wrap dress and red suede high heels adorned with little black bows. As far as I’m concerned, it’s one outfit that screams optimism.
If you’re starting work, dress to impress. Become the intern, summer associate and new hire who communicates optimism by choosing business attire that's elegant.
