Values

January 04, 2006

This month, I’ve committed to sharing strategies to help you achieve any personal or professional goals you might have set for the New Year.

Here’s the second strategy. Make sure all of your goals are consistent with your personal values.

This means you need to invest some time determining what it is that you truly value most. This is no small investment of time and effort. Most of us possess a set of core values that are fundamental to our very existence. But, because these values are so central to our being, we may be unable to articulate them.

If identifying your core values seems like a daunting task, shoot me an e-mail. I’ll share with you a “Checklist for Personal Values” exercise that I was given some years ago. It’s helped me clarify those values that clearly guide my own behavior. Once you’ve identified your core values, you can confirm whether the goals you’ve set are consistent with what you value most.
