Tweeting Your Way to the Unemployment Line

March 25, 2009

Just a few weeks ago, after I spotted members of Congress thumbing away on their BlackBerrys during a presidential address, I suggested that there are times when it simply is not appropriate to play with electronic devices. I further noted that so many of the postings on the social net-working site, Twitter, are at best inane.

Today’s news is filled with yet another reason to skip tweeting. A recent tweet by a CISCO job applicant has proved that the easiest way to place a black mark on your résumé may be to post a tweet on the Twitter web site. In today’s less than stellar economic times, the CISCO applicant had the temerity to write:

CISCO just offered me a job. Now I have to weigh the utility of a fatty paycheck against the daily commute to San Jose and hating the work.

Not surprisingly, CISCO, a major player in the technology world, discovered the tweet shortly after its posting.

Outside of the technology company, no one seems to know for certain whether or not the CISCO job offer was withdrawn. It is yet another reminder, however, of the importance of not posting anything on-line that you would not like some other person (think parent, spouse, child, teacher, minister, employer, client, bar association, medical association, etc.) to read.
