Travel Tricks

October 14, 2007

This week marks the beginning of Week 4 in what will be an eight week tour. I am often asked how I manage to pack for a trip like this, especially given that when this tour began most of the country was still experiencing late summer weather, and by the time the trip ends, all of the country will be experiencing mid-fall, if not early winter weather. Here are my travel tricks.

I started the tour toting along two summer-weight suits as well as a short sleeve “travel dress.” After each of my presentations, I changed out of my suit and into my travel dress. This allowed the suits to stay fresher longer. Additionally, it ensured that if a flight attendant or fellow traveler spilled something on me during a flight, the travel dress, rather than a suit, would be taken out of commission.

Last weekend, with the help of my home office, we conducted a major switcheroo. The home office shipped out two fall weight suits, I picked up a new fall-weight travel dress in NYC, and I shipped to Denver the lighter weight clothing. I should be set to go for the next few weeks. The only challenge I face is the potential for a blast of really cold air, in which case I’ll need to pick up some additional cover-up.

By the way, by limiting myself to two suits, a travel dress, a pair of yoga pants and an exercise top, I can avoid checking luggage—truly a rookie mistake.

Given the amount of time I spend on airplanes, some people have expressed surprise that I don’t dress more comfortably. In fact, many have suggested that I should skip the travel dress and slip into my yoga pants before boarding a flight. I hesitate to do this mostly because I am increasingly aware of the possibility that I might encounter a current client or prospective client on a flight. It is more important to me that those clients see the “best” me rather than the “most comfortable” me.
