'Tis the Season for Giving
December 14, 2005
Exchanging holiday gifts at work can serve as a wonderful way to recognize the contributions others have made to a successful business year. Before you purchase gifts for colleagues or clients, consider the following:
1. Confirm whether your organization’s policies and procedures permit both giving and receiving gifts. It’s also a good idea to confirm any limits on the financial value of a gift.
2. Avoid gifts that are too personal in nature, for example, perfume or clothing. (Have I mentioned the woman law partner I met who told me about her first big courtroom win? The client gave her a beautifully wrapped gift . . . which she later discovered contained lingerie. Definitely not appropriate.)
3. Avoid "gag" gifts or any type of gift that might embarass you or the recipient.
