Stressed to the Max

October 02, 2006

Feeling a little stressed lately? You’re not alone. According to H.R. Magazine http://www.shrm.org/hrmagazine/articles/0906/0906tyler.asp, more than 50% of all employees say they experience “high levels of stress,” extreme fatigue and a feeling of being completely out of control. Half of employees report that the high level of stress in their lives causes them to miss a day or two of work each year. And about the same percent report that stress causes them to be completely ineffective at work one to four days per year.

According to the article’s author, Kathryn Tyler, the extreme level of stress has major implications for the workplace. It causes increased illness, healthcare costs, and rates of turnover. In my experience, it also increases incivility at work.

Tyler writes that while many offices are attempting to relieve workplace pressure by offering onsite concierges and flex-time options, the most effective solution may be training managers, especially those whose supervisory skills contribute to worker’s stress. Additionally, providing training that helps workers do their jobs better may help ease workplace pressure.
