Start Off Organized
If you’ve just launched your career, nothing is more important than learning how to prioritize your day-to-day work. I recommend you use the “I-Beam Approach” for organizing your day.
Here’s what the I-Beam Approach entails. First, set aside 15 – 20 minutes at the beginning of each day to review the tasks you must accomplish, estimate the amount of time each task will require, and prioritize the tasks. Second, tackle your tasks, completing all “A” priorities before you even look at your “B” and “C” tasks. Third, before you close down at the end of the day, spend another 15 – 20 minutes reviewing the tasks you completed and the accuracy of your time estimates. Please don’t skip this last step. It will help you become more accurate in estimating the amount of time future projects will require.
Most importantly, commit to “Do it now!” Let’s face it, all of us have tasks that we would prefer to put off . . . forever. Me? I hate tracking my cash expenditures and filling out expense reports. I’ve learned, however, that if I tackle these tasks daily, I experience far less stress than I do when I try to recreate a week’s worth of spending activities over the weekend.
