Social Networking No Nos

October 15, 2006

Have you posted personal information on one of the social networking sites, for example, MySpace, Facebook or Friendster? If you are entering the work force, consider pulling any personal information down.

Increasingly, employers visit the Internet to research job candidates. They are particularly interested in discerning whether or not a candidate demonstrates that all important “good judgment.”  Employers are likely to be concerned when they read postings like: “Missed class again today after crashing in girl friend’s apartment last night. Must have been the 10th shot of tequila that got me.”

By the way, it’s not just employers who are researching the worldwide web. Ethics committees are, too. No one should be surprised to learn that medical boards and bar associations have an interest in determining whether the newest members of their professions abuse alcohol or drugs, and personal postings on the Internet may provide a means of determining this.
