Shoulder Months
June 11, 2007
With summer temperatures set to soar, I’ve been asked whether it is ever appropriate to wear a sleeveless blouse or dress into the office. For gentlemen, in most cases the answer is an obvious "No." For ladies, a sleeveless blouse, sweater or dress, made of quality fabric, may be perfectly appropriate for the office. Just be cautious with your selection.
Throughout the summer months, I often wear sleeveless silk shells under my suit coats. Whenever I present, I wear my jacket over the shell. Once I leave an office and head out into the heat and humidity, I frequently remove my jacket. If I worked in a typical office, I would always make sure to keep a jacket nearby. That way, if I were invited to meet with senior members of the organization or clients, I could simply slip the jacket back on and be ready to present.
Some tops are simply not business appropriate. When dressing for an office setting, avoid wearing halter tops, tank tops, tube tops, camisoles and any top with a plunging neckline or large armholes through which undergarments may be viewed.
