Shaggy Looks

September 25, 2006

Whenever I meet with new associates and discuss appropriate attire, inevitably at least one or two young ladies approach me afterwards and ask whether they really need to wear hosiery to work. It’s one of those questions that young gentlemen never feel the need to ask.

This year, however, a surprisingly large number of young gentlemen have approached with their own inquiry: Do I really need to shave on a daily basis?

Before you place your razor on hiatus, consider your workplace’s culture. In the early stages of your career, it’s important that you fit in with that culture. So gentlemen, observe more senior professionals in your organization.  If they shave daily, you should too.

If you wish to grow a beard—something that can actually help a younger male professional appear a bit older—hold off until vacation. Then, once your beard has grown in, make sure you keep it neatly trimmed.
