Overexposure Avoidance

June 08, 2006

When so many businesses moved from “business” to “business casual” dress policies, it was understood fairly quickly that male recruits dressed appropriately whenever they showed up to work in khakis and golf shirts. The rules were far less clear for women--intentionally or not, this made life much more difficult for female recruits. To this day, and especially during the hot summer months, we receive more questions regarding what is appropriate for young women to wear to the office. The following are items we recommend young professional women avoid:

  • Dresses or tops with spaghetti straps
  • Camisoles
  • Cropped tops
  • Tops that reveal cleavage
  • Tiered skirts
  • Sarong skirts
  • Sandals

Low-ride slacks continue to be quite popular, and there’s no reason not to wear them to work. Just remind your recruits that whatever top they wear with these slacks must always meet the top of the slacks, thereby avoiding midriff exposure.
