Organize, Organize, Organize

As you start to settle into your career, nothing is more important than creating organizational systems to help manage your work. Not only does this help you work more effectively and efficiently, it also helps communicate that you are an organized professional.

I consistently use two organizational tools to manage my projects. First, at all times I carry a work journal—a 5” x 8” bound journal in which I record virtually everything. You’ll find my to-do lists in this journal, as well as my notes from meetings and telephone conversations. By retaining all of this information in one place, I avoid having to search through miscellaneous papers for someone’s phone number or the contents of a conversation.

Second, I use color folders to help manage my business life. I file all client work in clearly labeled manila folders. Then, I file research I undertake in red folders; copies of receipts go into green folders; and my travel itineraries and hotel confirmations are always filed in blue folders. By using different color folders, I minimize the search time for critically important information.
