Office Santa Non-Redux

December 18, 2006

Suppose you’ve received a lovely little trinket from your office Secret Santa, a trinket identical to something you already own. Is it ever appropriate to regift?

Regifting has been around forever, and if undertaken with care and consideration, it may actually be a good idea. After all, surely it is better to regift an item than to add a perfectly fine trinket to our already brimming landfills. The trick is to make sure you regift with care. Consider these best practices:

  • Never regift if doing so would hurt the feelings of the original gift giver.
  • Avoid regifting something that has been personalized for you.
  • Any item you regift should be new and unused. Avoid regifting that warm scarf or trendy necktie that someone gave you last year.
  • Before you regift an item, check carefully to ensure that all previously used gift tags or cards have been removed. Then dress the gift in all new wrapping paper, ribbon and bows.

On a side note, on Tuesday of this week I conduct my last presentation of 2006, and then fly off to Florence, Italy, where I intend to turn off my laptop, take lots of long walks and eat some fabulous food. So let me close the year by wishing each of you the happiest of holiday seasons!
