Necktie Nuance

September 28, 2006

A new lawyer who attended one of our business etiquette seminars recently e-mailed about a dispute that had erupted in his office. The issue in contention: The appropriate length of a necktie.

Gentlemen, when you tie a necktie, the tip of that tie should just touch the top of your belt buckle. And of course, the wider portion of the tie should fully cover the thinner portion.

If you’re struggling with technique, go to www.tie-a-tie.net. Once there, you’ll find detailed diagrams for four different knots. You may wish to scroll through the site and learn how to best untie your neckwear (yes, there is a best way) as well as a method for getting rid of tie wrinkles.

If over a business lunch or dinner you manage to stain your tie, do not take it to your local dry cleaners, and please don’t even consider using an over-the-counter stain remover. Instead, do what my husband does and ship your ties off to Tiecrafters (www.tiecrafters.com). They have more than 50 years of experience taking care of neckware. We’ve never been disappointed with them.
