Mary Meets Morley
November 13, 2007
This past Sunday evening, 60 Minutes featured a segment on Millennials, the young people born in or around 1982, who are now beginning to enter the workplace. Earlier this summer, I was interviewed by CBS correspondent Morley Safer for the segment. Part of that interview was televised on Sunday.
I have been fascinated with the feedback that I have received from people who saw the interview. The Millennials and their Boomer bosses really are sizing each other up and neither seems to really like what they see. I have received several e-mails from Boomers that describe the incoming worker generation as “spoiled,” inconsiderate,” and “feel entitled.” I have also heard from Millennials who write they have no desire to conform and would prefer to decide on their own how they can best add value to society.
