Marked . . . For Life

May 21, 2006

Here’s an eye opening statistic: 36% of those between 25 and 39 have visited the local tattoo shop. This means that at least one of your new professionals or recruits likely sports a tattoo. If so, you may wish to share the following advice with them.

While in the office, tattoos should be covered. If a tattoo has been applied to an ankle, employees should plan on wearing slacks and dark socks or hosiery. If applied to the neck, employees should plan on wearing collars that will cover it. If a tattoo has been applied to the lower part of the back (I call these “bumper stickers”), employees should make sure shirts, blouses or sweaters always cover that skin.

Where a tattoo has been applied to a hand, it’s probably impractical to request that anyone wear gloves. Employees should, however, consider applying some make-up that will help conceal the tattoo.

Should you suddenly become aware that one or a group of new recruits has discussed getting a tattoo this summer, suggest that they keep any tattoo as discrete as possible. Remind them that most tattoos are permanent. Once applied, they’re stuck with the potential that others will see the tattoo throughout the remainder of their lives.
