Language

January 12, 2006

This month, I’ve committed to sharing strategies to help you achieve any goals you might have set for the New Year. So far, here’s what we’ve covered:

Strategy 1: Make sure the goal is something you truly want to achieve.
Strategy 2: Make sure the goal is consistent with your personal values.
Strategy 3: Make sure your goals are in balance.

Here’s the fourth strategy. As you begin to draft your goals, use positive language.

The language we use to express any thought can be an exceedingly powerful tool. We know this intrinsically. Words may inspire, motivate and empower. They may also discourage, deflate and destroy. As you draft your goals, choose words carefully. The language you use will affect how your subconscious responds to the goal. When your goals include words like “will,” subconsciously you are encouraged to achieve. To the extent your goals include words like “won’t,” subconsciously you are encouraged to retreat.
