It's Party Time
December 07, 2006
If you’ve been invited to an office or a client party during this holiday season, make sure you attend. These events are great ways for you to enhance your relationships with co-workers and demonstrate an interest in your clients.
Before you go, keep the following tips in mind:
- Unless the invitation specifies otherwise, R.S.V.P. Ensure your host or hostess knows of your intent to attend. Alternatively, if you will not be able to attend, communicate your regrets.
- Remember, once you have communicated you will attend, only an emergency excuses your absence.
- Eat a small snack before you leave for the event. This will help you avoid over-grazing at the buffet table.
- If the event is scheduled to take place after work, appropriate attire includes business dress. Ladies may add a bit of sparkle by wearing a sequined sweater.
- Make sure you mingle. Spend no more than 15 minutes with any one person or group of people.
- Even at an office party, try to avoid talking about work. Instead, use the event to connect with others on more personal basis. If someone else raises a work topic, speak only in positive terms.
- Whatever you do, consume alcoholic beverages with caution. More than one person’s reputation has been ruined by one too many laced-with-liquor egg nogs. Make sure you keep your reputation in tact.
Have fun throughout the holiday entertaining season. Never forget, however, that office parties are still business events. At all times act like the consummate professional that you are.
