In 2007 Get Happy
January 08, 2007
Welcome to 2007! If you’re still in the process of creating your resolutions for this new year, grab Jonathan Clements’s article, “Nine Tips for Investing in Happiness,” which ran in the October 8, 2006 Wall Street Journal (www.wsj.com). Clements looked through the work of economists and psychologists and developed nine tips that are likely to keep you happier this year. They include:
- Make time for friends.
- Forget the pay raise—It’s unlikely to make you happier in the long run.
- Don’t trade up.
- Keep your commute short.
- Count your blessings.
- Enjoy a good meal.
- Challenge yourself both at work and in your leisure time.
- Volunteer.
- Give yourself time to become happy.
Clements reports that many describe themselves as increasingly grumpy as they approach their 40s. This may reflect mid-life pressures of balancing work and family or frustrations with our failure to fulfill youthful ambitions. The good news is that with time, most become happier.
