Face Time

October 16, 2008

One of the traits many Millennials bring to the workplace is a complete lack of understanding about the importance of “face time,” those opportunities to connect with others at work on a face-to-face basis.

This should come as no surprise. After all, the Millennials have grown-up in a wired to the max world. With their laptops and BlackBerrys always close at hand, the Millennials know full well that they can work anywhere and at any time. Showing up in the office just to gain some face time with more senior members of work teams is viewed as a time-wasting throw-back to an earlier era.

What those new professionals may miss, however, is building important relationships with senior team members. Relationships with older professionals are unlikely to be built over text messages. Rather, many senior professionals often prefer face-to-face conversations as a vehicle to develop confidence in their newest hires.

In a world that quickly seems to be heading into a recession, Millennial employees should carefully consider how they can build working relationships with many of their fellow employees—peers and more senior employees alike. It is much easier for a manager to dismiss an employee they hardly know than it is to lose someone with whom that manager has built a strong working relationship.
