Last week I had the opportunity to work with an especially fun bunch of new professionals. As soon as I finished presenting our Rules of Engagement (business etiquette) program, the questions came at me fast and furious.
 
I had suggested to the new professionals that even if their organization had adopted a business casual dress policy, all of them, men and women alike, should stash a blazer or a jacket somewhere in their office. (Guys, it’s a good idea to keep a tie available, too.)  Should a more senior professional invite them out to lunch or to a client meeting, the junior can simply pull on their blazer. This will help the junior communicate that he or she is the consummate professional.
 
At the end of the session, someone asked whether there were any other items they should all keep stashed in their offices. Here are a few that I recommended:
  1. Small applicator of shoe polish
  2. Stain removal products (Look for products that will remove food beverage and protein stains as well as products that will remove pen and ink stains.)
  3. Lint brush
  4. Comb/brush and hair spray
  5. Back-up umbrella

In addition, ladies, I recommend you stash away a back-up pair of hose and some black nail polish. The latter is the fastest and easiest way I know to cover up those little nicks that sidewalks deliver to our heels.
