Don't Say Bleep!
You know you shouldn’t swear at work, and now I’ll tell you why.
A new survey indicates that 57% of employers are less likely to promote people who swear around the workplace. Undertaken by CareerBuilder.com, the survey indicated that employers see cursing as a symptom of a potential big problem.
Here are the specifics:
81% of employers say swearing calls into question an employee’s professionalism
71% of employers say swearing may indicate a lack of control
68% of employers say swearing demonstrates a lack of maturity
54% of employers say swearing makes an employee look and sound less intelligent
About half of all employees admit to swearing at work, with workers aged 35- to 44-years old reporting they are most likely to curse at work.
Unfortunately, bosses may not be setting the best example. The same survey found that about half of employers surveyed admit to swearing at work, too.
What’s the take-away? If you’re starting work as an intern, summer associate or new hire, don’t swear at work.
