Dining for Dollars, Continued

August 28, 2006

Knowing some basic rules of dining etiquette can help make the lunch or dinner that follows an interview far less threatening. As you prepare for these important meals, keep the following rules in mind:

Napkin – Place your napkin on your lap as soon as you are seated.

Meal - Wait for your host or hostess to raise their fork and take a bite of food before you begin eating. Use the meal to further build a relationship with your prospective employer. Allow the host or hostess to initiate any business discussion.

Passing Food – Pass foods to the right. When you pass salt and pepper shakers, remember they are passed together.

Bread & Butter Plates – Your break & butter plate will be found on the left side of your place setting.  (Need a clue to help you remember this? Visit http://www.marycrane.com/shop/shopMary.jsp to buy one of our “Coffee Cup Clue” coffee mugs.

Bread – Break bread or rolls into small pieces. Butter pieces of bread or roll individually before eating them.

Pace – Plan on dining at pace identical to your host or hostess.
