Button-Holed

August 13, 2007

Last week I met with the 2Ls (second year law students) of the University of Iowa in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes proved to be wonderful hosts, clearly determined to succeed during this year’s on- and off-campus interview season.

The gentlemen in my audience posed question after question about appropriate attire during and after the interview. As they quickly learned, in the interview setting, I strongly recommend gentlemen wear navy blue suits, white dress shirts, a tie with a small repeating pattern, black socks and black shoes. Several gentlemen asked whether their suit coats should remained buttoned throughout the course of their interview. While I recommend that gentlemen job candidates enter the interview room with their jackets fully buttoned, as they are seated, gentlemen may unbutton their jackets.

Please note, both gentlemen and ladies should plan to wear their suit jackets throughout the entirety of the interview. If, after the formal interview, you are invited to lunch, recognize that the lunch is a continuation of the interview and continue to wear your suit coat throughout the meal. If for whatever reason your host or hostess removes their suit coat, you may do the same. Avoid, however, appearing more relaxed or informal than your interviewers.
