Bare Essentials
In a million years, I would never have anticipated the need to address this topic. Yesterday, I learned otherwise. During a break in a presentation to a group of law firm administrators, one attendee received the following e-mail message: Does the firm require me to wear a bra to work?
I’m betting that no law firm or corporate dress policy touches this topic. Who would have thought they’d need to? But it appears they do.
For both men and women, undergarments serve multiple purposes. In the winter, they add warmth. They may serve as a barrier between itchy cloth and delicate skin. Additionally, they promote hygiene. In the workplace, wearing undergarments promotes a level of modesty and decorum.
Young men and women who wish to communicate they are serious professionals don appropriate undergarments, including bras for women. Undergarments should not be visible to others. Bra straps, thongs and tee-shirts should remain fully covered by business attire.
When dressing for the office, professionals take into consideration how comfortable or uncomfortable their appearance may make others feel.
