Balance

January 08, 2006

This month, I’ve committed to sharing strategies to help you achieve any goals you might have set for the New Year. So far, we’ve discussed the importance of making sure any goal you set is truly something you want to achieve—not something that you’ve written down to please or impress someone else. We’ve also discussed the importance of making sure that your goals are consistent with your personal values.

Here’s a third strategy: make sure all of your goals, both your professional and personal goals, are in balance.

There’s not a person I know who doesn’t constantly struggle with work-life balance. In fact, one recent survey reported that six out of 10 Americans say their workloads have increased over the last six months contributing to increased stress levels and dissatisfaction with their work-life balance. Seems like we all feel a bit out of kilter.

When setting goals, make sure you seek balance. Consider setting goals that are work related (career advancement, a raise), and still others that are strictly personal. With regards to the latter, you may wish to consider setting specific social, mental, spiritual and/or physical goals.
