All Super Heroes Wear Pantyhose

January 23, 2013

At least that’s what I’ve long believed. Of course, I entered the workforce in an era when professional women, in addition to wearing hosiery—the most miserably hot item of clothing one can pull on in the summer, which offers not one whit of warmth in the winter—were also expected to wear boxy suits AND big, fluffy, bow ties.

I gave up my bow ties eons ago, but I cling to my hosiery. To this date, when heading to a presentation or client meeting, I don’t feel properly and professionally dressed unless I have something covering my legs. When program attendees ask whether they need to don hosiery, I always tell them to look at senior women in the organization in which they are employed, and follow their leads.

Well, ladies of Washington, D.C., take heed. At a January 20th pre-inaugural lunch, both First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden appeared sans any sort of hosiery. They’ve opened the door for lots of other professional women to adopt this fashion statement.

So, ladies, you’re off the hook. Gentlemen, unless you work in an entity that’s adopted a very lax dress code, pull on some socks. They may not transform you into a super hero, but you’ll better fit in at work.
